Gold, Silver, Coins, Bullion – What’s the Difference?

If you’re new to precious metals, some of the terminology can make things seem more complicated than they really are.

Bullion generally refers to precious metals valued primarily for their metal content. This can include coins, rounds, and bars made from gold, silver, and other precious metals.

Coins are issued by a government mint and have a denomination, although their metal or collector value can be much higher than the number stamped on them.

Rounds may look similar to coins but are privately minted and aren’t government currency.

Then you have bars, poured pieces, fractional pieces, frags, and other forms that give collectors plenty of different ways to own and enjoy precious metals.

There’s no single correct way to build a collection. Some people focus on metal content, some collect specific coins or mints, and others simply buy pieces they think are cool.

That’s part of what makes the hobby interesting.
